Soccer Earns Road Win 1-0 Over Calverton School

The St. Albans soccer team traveled to Huntingtown, MD Tuesday night to face The Calverton School, which boasts a talented dynamic offense.  Both teams exchanged excellent chances early with Bulldogs Goalkeeper Spencer Hall diving to stop a close-in shot before the defense settled itself.  After the first 10 minutes the St. Albans attack found its rhythm resulting in several quality chances at the Calverton goal.  Niall Fergus, James Boyle, Rustin Khosravi, and Jack Marriott led the way with several strong passing plays and shots.  The Bulldogs had five corners at the 20-minute mark.  With ten minutes left in the half Marriott broke through with a 20-yard strike from the top of the penalty box that found the back of the net and gave the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead.

Calverton came out with renewed purpose in the second half but the Bulldog defense was up to the task led by strong backline play from Thomas Schehl, Leo Siegel, Amari Jack and Jack Sabel.  Sabel was particularly strong in the right-back spot in the first half as Calverton tried many attacks on his side.  The Cougars tried the other wing several times in the second half and Scheel was up to the task.  When the hosts did get balls into the middle Jack and Siegel turned them away.  Calverton pressed hard in the final 10 minutes of regulation and almost six minutes of injury time.  Hall made several saves down the stretch and the defense stayed organized as the Cougars attempted to stretch balls to their fastest attackers.  The Bulldogs did not sit back on the lead as Max Bean, Charlie Irwin and Chris Bates won many mid-field balls to keep the pressure on Calverton’s defense.

St. Albans is now 1-1 on the season and hosts Maret at 4pm on Steuart Field Friday.
